Sterkstroom: Where the Bush Pours Into the Glass

The five Mhondoro Sterkstroom bottles resting in ice on a wooden deck: vodka, brandy, limoncello, gin and rum.

Some places do not simply host you. They tell you a story, and then, if you are very lucky, they pour it into a glass. At Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa, deep in the Waterberg of Limpopo, that story now arrives in five bottles.

Inside the 36 000 hectares of the malaria-free Welgevonden Game Reserve, where the Big 5 appear often enough to feel like old neighbours, Mhondoro has launched an exclusive collection of five artisanal South African spirits. They are called Sterkstroom, and they were created with Primal Distillery.

A River With a Strong Heart

The name belongs to the river that winds through the reserve. Sterkstroom means a strong or powerful current, and you can feel that pull in the whole idea: a collection that carries the energy and character of the land it was born from.

Each spirit is dedicated to one of Welgevonden's iconic animals. Which means that a sundowner here is not just a drink. It is a small safari of its own.

Five Spirits, Five Wild Characters

Elephant Gin. The gentle giant of the collection. It carries the rare Rex Union orange, a heritage South African citrus, with Eastern Cape juniper and fresh botanicals grown by Primal in Johannesburg.

Lion Light Rum. Made from South African sugar cane, with all the warmth and quiet confidence of its namesake.

Buffalo Cape Reserve Brandy. Rich and full of character, made from grapes sourced from established South African wine regions.

Rhino Premium Grain Vodka. Triple-distilled for a smooth, full-bodied finish, with a whisper of herbal notes.

Leopard Limoncello. The quiet secret. It is made in-house through Mhondoro's Farmhouse Project, blending Primal vodka with lemons from the organic Vygeboom farm next to the reserve, using a recipe created at the lodge.

City Spirit Meets Wild Soul

Primal Distillery is based in Johannesburg, and it brings a contemporary, craft-driven way of thinking to the bottle: ingredient quality, provenance, and the story behind every spirit.

I love what happens when those two worlds meet. The restless energy of the city sits down beside the slow, unhurried heartbeat of the bush. Guests get to taste the landscape they came to explore, and to step away from the noise, breathe, slow down and reconnect with the natural world.

Sundowners, Reimagined

These spirits were made for golden hour. Picture a cocktail, or a classic pour, as the sky over Welgevonden turns amber and rose, and the bush begins its evening song. The sundowner stops being a drink and becomes a celebration of the place that inspired it.

More Than a Bar Menu

Sterkstroom is one chapter in a bigger story of thoughtful, distinctive hospitality. The kitchen draws inspiration from menus created by chef Luke Dale Roberts. The wine list is premium, with exclusive house wines from boutique winemaker Snow Mountain Wines.

Among them are the Elcat Sparkling Chardonnay, the Wit Voël Chenin Blanc and the Rooi Voël Syrah from old vines in Wellington, and the Wit Voël Chardonnay and Rooi Voël Merlot made from Stellenbosch grapes.

In the Owner's Words

For owner Frank Vogel, this was a natural next step, grounded in a simple belief: that luxury is increasingly defined by provenance, authenticity and a strong sense of place.

“Creating our own collection of spirits felt like a natural next step for Mhondoro. A premium experience is not defined by an international label, but by the quality, provenance and story behind what we serve. Working with Primal Distillery has allowed us to select the ingredients, develop the flavour profiles and ensure every spirit reflects the quality we want our guests to experience.”

“It is equally important that the collection is made here in South Africa. Local production supports exceptional South African craftsmanship while reducing transport distances and our environmental footprint. We wanted spirits with a genuine connection to Mhondoro and Welgevonden, and a story our guests can take home. It is a collection we are proud to put our name to.”
